a Northwestern University outreach initiative connecting science to the community

Sigma Xi
The Northwestern chapter of the international honor society of science and engineering sponsors a series of public outreach lectures, Science Cafe, for the community.

The international honor society of science and engineering, Sigma Xi accepts members based on their research potential or achievements and so provides a supportive environment for interdisciplinary research within and outside of the local Northwestern University chapter.

Our NU chapter of Sigma Xi recognizes scientific research accomplishments and draws its membership primarily from the University, as well as the research and development laboratories in the Chicago area. We view education and community outreach as integral parts of our mission to both improve understanding of scientific research through programs such as Science Cafe and Junior Science Cafe, as well as encourage a sense of companionship and cooperation among our member researchers in all fields of science.

Science Cafe is free and open to the public for discussing the latest scientific issues.  In a relaxed forum, a scientific researcher will talk about his or her projects, the audience will have a short break to refill whatever is in their glasses or cups, and then the floor is open to discussion, debate, questions and answers.
