Earlier in 2015, Science in Society was officially promoted to a University Research Center under Northwestern’s Office for Research. This tremendous recognition included increased funding and strategic support directly from the Vice President for Research.

“Designating Science in Society a Northwestern research center reflects the excellent, nationally-recognized work being done, and emphasizes Northwestern’s continued investment in community engagement” said Jay Walsh, Vice President for Research.

Adding to its portfolio of community engagement and learning programs, Science in Society launched two new initiatives in Fall 2015: a multi-year STEM tutoring program with students at Mather High School, and a course developed in partnership with Medill School of Journalism to hone STEM graduate student writing skills.

Science in Society now houses thirteen initiatives which train and connect Northwestern researchers to the Evanston and Chicago communities, and the center is poised for continued growth in the year ahead. A second Science Club site will open in Little Village, and a new $1.2m NIH grant will help establish Science Club Summer Camp: a dual-pronged initiative comprised of a two-year STEM professional development program for elementary school teachers and a summer program for Chicago youth at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago.

To deliver this expanded roster, Science in Society has added three new team members in the second half of 2015 and is still in the process of recruiting. The center is currently accepting applications for two more positions: a Program Coordinator to support the growing Science Club and new Science Club Summer Camp initiatives, and a Program Assistant to support administration and event planning across the entire project portfolio.

If you are dedicated to science education and engagement and would like to join the team consider applying today!

Interested applicants should apply through the Northwestern online application portal under Job ID 26920 and Job ID 27108 respectively.
