[Now Closed] 3rd grade CPS teachers, you’re invited to Science Club Summer Camp!

Science Club Summer Camp (SC2) is now accepting applications for 2017! This three-week paid summer training and practicum program is designed to help CPS third grade teachers meaningfully integrate the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in their own classrooms.

Participating teachers spend a week at Northwestern University’s Chicago campus, where they explore what NGSS means for the classroom, dissect a new CPS curriculum unit, learn from expert elementary science and engineering teachers, and meet with a wide range of scientists. In 2016, teachers in the SC2 Weather and Climate program even took a field trip to ABC 7 News to meet with meteorologist Tracy Butler.

Then, SC2 teachers head into the field for a two-week practicum at the Boys & Girls Club of Chicago. Here, participants have the unique opportunity to hone their new skills by co-leading science sessions at a fun, informal summer camp, with help from CPS master teachers, Northwestern scientists, and Boys & Girls Club staff.

During the following school year, SC2 teachers become part of a professional learning community. Teachers, scientists, and master teachers meet throughout the year to prepare for curriculum implementation, review successes and challenges in the classroom, and support one another. They also receive free curriculum kits to implement the module they practiced at SC2. Read about last year’s SC2 experience.

To learn more or apply, visit the Science Club Summer Camp website. Teachers are eligible to apply if they will be teaching third grade in a CPS neighborhood school for AY 2017-18 and work in a school that serves a population with at least 60% free/reduced price lunch.

Applications close on March 6, 2017. Program dates, sample schedules, and more information can be found here.
