Science Explorers is now recruiting full-time Science Education Fellows to provide mentoring and tutoring support for students in two Chicago Public School high schools during the 2018-19 school year.
This program, currently in its second year, aims to build science skills and school success by strengthening academic attitudes and behaviors – like academic confidence, perseverance, and study habits – and support individual subject tutoring in freshman biology. To accomplish this, Science Education Fellows build deep, academically-focused relationships with small groups of ninth grade students. These groups meet twice a week during the school day for the entire academic year. Fellows also support science teachers and provide tutoring before and after school.
The ideal Fellow has a college degree in science or engineering and a passion for social justice and improving the life outcomes of Chicago youth. Fellows must work well as part of a flexible team and have previous experience working with K-12 students. They will receive training and support from both Science in Society and CPS staff, gaining valuable experience and professional development in urban education and science teaching.
Through long-term, focused mentorship, Fellows have the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of underserved youth in CPS. Fellows help close the achievement gap one student – and one meaningful relationship – at a time.
Fellows are contracted for the academic year. Contracts begin in August 2018.
