Racism is dehumanizing to everyone it touches. The murder of six Asian American-identified women –  Daoyou Feng, Hyun Jung Grant, Xiaojie Tan, Soon Chung Park, Yong Ae Yue, and Suncha Kim – has horrified all of us at Science in Society. As we mark the one month anniversary of these murders, SiS would like to publicly state our grief, reflections and alliship with the Asian-American and Pacific Islander community.  Although these murders occurred over seven hundred miles away, this loss is felt within our community – partners, stakeholders, and volunteers. We stand in solidarity in condemning acts of discrimination, bigotry, and violence.

These continued acts of hate remind all of us that we must actively address anti-Asian rhetoric, sentiments, and behaviors. Within SiS, we commit to the following actions:

  1. Continuing to study and evaluate the ways we can actively combat and discourage anti-Asian racism within our programs.
  2. Pursuing and sharing additional education about Asian and Asian American cultures, histories, achievements, contributions to science, and the arts.
  3. Continuing to foster a community of multicultural inclusion and respect.
  4. Continuing to hold ourselves accountable to address issues of inequity and support all participants across our programs. This includes actively addressing and reporting at early-stages any racist activities or inappropriate behaviours within the schools and programs with which we partner.
