Northwestern's Science in Society and the Boys & Girls Club of Chicago (BGCC) welcomed community members and donors to the official grand opening of a new laboratory on Tuesday, April 11. The custom-built lab will be home to Science Club at the True Value BGCC in Little Village, a neighborhood on the west side of Chicago. Science Club expanded to True Value BGCC in Winter 2016, following eight successful years at the program’s flagship site, Pederson-McCormick BGCC.
Last week, Northwestern’s Science in Society and three other Chicago-area organizations received awards of distinction from honor society Phi Beta Kappa.
Phi Beta Kappa is a premier academic honor society, known for celebrating excellence and advocating for the arts and sciences since its inception in 1776. Each year the society coordinates service projects, college scholarships and service awards in chapters across the country.
For the second time, Science in Society was awarded a $1.2 million Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The award will be used to launch Science Club Summer Camp, a practicum-based professional development program for Chicago Public School elementary teachers.
